Jimmy Carter backing for Barack Obama
By The Anglo American | May 29, 2008
In a presidential race that was a foregone conclusion, the Democrats have presented voters with the most controversial choice in the history of US elections by confronting white male political dominance head-on.
Former President Jimmy Carter has all but confirmed his support for Barack Obama. In an interview in Britain the former President said:
“I don’t see any reason at all to continue after June third when we know who got the most [pledged] delegates, who got the most popular votes, who won the most states and so forth,”
The writing appears to be on the wall for Senator Clinton in that the race is over and that she has lost. It is almost impossible for Senator Clinton to overtake Senator Obama in the popular vote.
A key part of the Clinton campaign strategy is to appeal to the party grandees at the Democratic Convention this August, to overturn the popular vote. The former President, who is also a super-delegate, has advised against this.
“It would be undemocratic if the super-delegates blatantly went against the decision of Democratic voters across the nation”
The former President believes that the super-delegates will fall into line with the Democrat House speaker; Nancy Pelosi has consistently said that the party nominee should be the person with the most delegate votes on June 3rd.
In a presidential race that was a foregone conclusion, the Democrats have presented voters with the most controversial choice in the history of US elections by confronting white male political dominance head-on.
Senator Hillary Clinton has considerable support across America to become the first US woman President. But she now risks wrecking the party if she forces a super-delegate run-off to go against the popular vote.
Equally, Senator Barack Obama, Europe’s choice for President, has the risk of his campaign imploding thanks to his old pastor’s disregard for the separation of church from State and his limitless egotism.
The corrosive opportunism of the Rev Jeremiah Wright’s words only gives encouragement to the Clinton camp to fight on until August.
Senator McCain may well decide to put his feet up and see if the Democrat’s wrenching struggle will propel him to the White House.
Former President, Jimmy Carter is presently in Europe promoting his new book, “A Remarkable Mother”.
