Jonathan Powell was chief of Staff for the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. His recent book Great Hatred Little Room, is an attempt by British Labour politicians to draw a line under the Ulster conflict. But as much as Blair and Powell try to consolidate their legacy there is still a nagging doubt. Is this really peace in our time or, as Neville Chamberlain found to his cost, not worth the paper it was written on?

The Mayor of London ousted by WMD Journalist

Andrew Gilligan won the British Journalist of the Year award for his investigative skills. After the British Government had done its best to discredit him, it was a vote of confidence by his peers. If there were a journalist hall of fame he would be right there with Woodward and Bernstein.
Gilligan won this award for his investigation of corruption in the Greater London Authority - the city council for all of London. But the award resurrects his reputation as serious professional journalist - a reputation all but destroyed by the British Government. With the passage of time, it could be argued that it is the British Government whose reputation is now beyond the credibility of repair.

America’s withdrawal created a resentment that went far beyond the American about face with Pakistan. It cemented the belief, from within the region to the mosques in London, that the US was only there for its own interests. And it was into this vacuum that the Taliban walked, along with their criminal partners, Al-qaeda. It was a serious error of judgment and one that the American people, and the west, have paid dearly for.
