Unemployment Hits 7.9% in UK But One in Four Still Work for the State.
By The Anglo American | September 17, 2009
Britain follows the United States in seeing large numbers of its peoples lose their employment. 246,000 people lost their jobs in the UK in May, June and July this year.
As with the US this is the explicit consequence of being at the epicenter of the World’s banking collapse.
Although the European Union is presently showing higher unemployment much of this is driven the “club Med.” Countries. Spain’s unemployment is at a crisis level of 17.4 % the second quarter of 2009.
Britain’s unemployment is expected to peak at around 10% of the working population.

However, the effects of quantitative easing will force the government to cut public spending. After accusing the opposition parties of their intentions to slash public expenditure the word “cuts” have now passed the Prime Ministers lips for the first time.
What remains of the trade union movement has a concentration of membership in the public sector. At the recent Trade Union Congress a shot was passed in front of this or a future government that tries to cut public sector jobs. There was no debate about the severe repercussions of not cutting public services.
As one in four work directly or indirectly for the government there is considerable self-interest to preserve the status quo. Government employees have considerable incentive to vote Labor {Labour} in the next election - their jobs. Equally the challenge of any overburdening self-feeding government bureaucracy is to turn the tap off. Failure to do so is likely to lead Britain to the front door of the International Monetary Fund.
As of today, Britain’s National Heath Service continues recruit staff at unprecedented levels.

Good, Britain will still need healthcare tomorrow. This is a recession borne of private sector greed, why should those employed by the state. It should be noted that the NHS, in providing, in total better outcomes than the American system, at just over half the % of GDP, is by comparison still very efficient. Recently, I’ve enjoyed seeing ford, that great American brand, move jobs to Canada citing healthcare overheads, created by the inefficient system, making it too expensive to continue south of the border. I am however envious of Obamas science stimulus package, very sensible.
